How would you answer the following job interview question:
Name things that motivate you. Please, provide me with 3 to 5 things
What is motivation?
Motivation is a powerful tool. It can range from something completely abstract to something precise and specific, in a variety of shapes and sizes. Motivation can be egoistic or altruistic, and it’s limited only by one’s imagination.
Motivation is driven by expectations and ambitions, personality, needs or desires… Moreover, it may vary under different circumstances or environment, and even mood. And that is why being the question about things that motivate you might seem like an impossible question to answer… especially during job interviews.
Why interviewers are asking this question:
By this question interviewers want to get a sense of your personality. But more fundamentally, they want to see how you’re going to handle challenges, how you’re going to handle setbacks if the job is more complicated than you expected it would be.
The interviewers will also seek to find out whether the factors that motivate you are aligned with the company’s goals and with the role in which you would be working. After all, most people are motivated by many factors, including money, prestige, interacting with interesting people, or making a difference in the first place. They’re trying to figure out what drives you.
